A compulsory liquidation necessitates an investigation by the Official Receiver and is best avoided where possible from the perspective of a company director. A Creditors’ Voluntary Liquidation (CVL) is generally preferable but requires directors to take control of the situation themselves and to enter their own company into liquidation voluntarily.

A third form of liquidation worth knowing about is what’s called a Members’ Voluntary Liquidation (MVL), which is often the most tax-efficient means of entering a solvent business into liquidation in the UK.
