There are various different forms of liquidation in the UK with the most commonplace being compulsory liquidation. Typically this scenario will unfold if a company is being pursued through legal proceedings by a creditor whose debts cannot be paid. A compulsory liquidation scenario will usually lead to an investigation by the Official Receiver, which can be problematic for the directors involved. It is generally preferable for directors to take matters into their own hands if their company has become insolvent and to enter liquidation on a voluntary basis through a process such as a Creditors’ Voluntary Liquidation or CVL.

Another popular form of liquidation is referred to as a Members’ Voluntary Liquidation (MVL) which is often the most tax-efficient means of liquidating a solvent business.
